- Julian Assange (en)
- It is clear that from their very beginnings WikiLeaks planned to engage with professional media...Relations between WikiLeaks and some sections of the German press, such as Zeit Online and the business paper WirtschaftsWoche were cordial long before the big leaks of 2010 and there were also early links with the British press. For example, in November 2008 WikiLeaks published a report on post-election political killings among members of Kenya's banned Mungiki sect. The story achieved greater impact through a temporary alliance with Jon Swain, a journalist at the Sunday Times. This collaboration was significant: Assange went on to win the 2009 Amnesty International New Media Award for his role. (en)
- Baer's attempted injunction against the site backfired as, following the 'Streisand effect', the publicity drew global attention both to Wikileaks and the documents they wanted to suppress. (en)
- Assange released the full report on the corruption that had led to the UK government's taking control of the British overseas territories, the Turks and Caicos Islands , a popular Caribbean tourist destination and tax haven...the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office commissioned Sir Robin Auld to head up a Turks and Caicos Islands Commission of Inquiry. The Report by the Parliamentary Commission inquiry found that foreign property developers had given millions of US dollars in secret loans and payments to senior Islander politicians, including the TCI's former Premier, Michael Misick. A lawsuit in the UK High Court ensued, initially resulting in a contra mundum injunction against all media reporting (en)
- Assange found new friends in December 2007 in the Chaos Computer Club annual congress in Berlin. There he met key supporters, Jacob Appelbaum and Daniel Domscheit-Berg, and contacts such as the Swedish web-hosting company PRQ (en)
