- The Scythians , sailing through Pontus Euxinus penetrated the Danube and brought great devastation to Roman soil. Gallienus, having known these facts, gave the Byzantines Cleodamus and Athenaeus the task of rebuilding and walling the cities, and when fighting near Pontus the barbarians were defeated by the Byzantine generals.
